The Office of Career and Calling is a comprehensive career center with an array of resources and services along with staff who possess extensive knowledge and experience in the field of Career Services. We want to be a blessing by assisting you with discovering your calling and preparing you for your career!

We would love to begin a new dialogue and establish strategic partnerships with Employers seeking gifted and highly favored candidates. We also welcome Industry Volunteers/Coaches to participate in our career development seminars and workshops throughout the year. Meet the Career and Calling Team

  • Debra Bell - Coordinator of Student Work-Study & Internships

    Debra Bell is the Coordinator of Student Work-Study & Internships and is responsible for managing the Community Internship Program, Campus Interviews, and the Work-Study process on campus.

    Debra is the Career Counselor for the following Colleges/Schools on campus:

    • Dunham College of Business
    • School of Fine Arts

    Debra joined HBU in the Office of Career & Calling in November, 2016 as the Coordinator for Student WorkStudy and Internships. Prior to working at HBU, Debra was a Career Coach for Lee Hecht Harrison, Inc., a global outplacement firm and operates her own business P3 Coaching and Consulting as a Certified Professional Coach, Speaker, and Trainer through John Maxwell Team.

    Debra has worked in both the public and private sectors of the marketplace and brings a diverse skillset. Having worked in Career Transition since 2009 she brings a strong background in Career Coaching and Project Management. During this placement Debra worked with both professionals and executives in Career Services. Debra facilitated Career Services subjects matter, (resume writing, interviewing, networking, communication strategy) on company sites like GE Company, HP, Invesco, BP, Wells Fargo Bank, FMC Technologies, Nexus, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Debra has served on staff at two local churches, first, The Church Without Walls (Brookhollow Baptist Church), as Director of New Members Programs where Debra managed, coached, and trained over 200 volunteers in five areas of ministry across three campus locations. At Kainos Community Church Debra assumed the role of Executive Minister over Administration and Ministry Development. In this assignment Debra facilitated administrative and departmental ministry activity, resulting in 25% higher involvement in church wide initiatives.

We prepare all of our students for the World of Business beginning in the very first year of college and the career coaching and developing of our students continues throughout the undergraduate years into graduate school and beyond as HBU alumni professionals are encouraged to come back home for career assistance and retooling.

  • Aaron Swarts - Assistant Director of Career and Calling

    Aaron Swarts serves as the Assistant Director of Career and Calling is responsible for overseeing the Employer Relations operation for Career Fairs, Career Insiders Series, Recruit-A-Husky Booths, Etiquette Dinner, and other Employer-Driven Workshops & Events.

    Aaron is the Career Counselor for the following colleges/schools on campus:

    • College of Science & Mathematics
    • School of Nursing & Allied Health
    • School of Christian Thought

    Aaron recently started as the Assistant Director of Career and Calling at Houston Baptist University in October of 2016. Aaron is in charge of Employer Relations and is the point of contact for Career Fairs, Information Sessions, Career Development Seminars, and other events on campus.

    Prior to working at HBU, he served as Assistant Director of Career Services at The Art Institute of Houston, as well as an Graduate Assistant (Academic) Advisor at the University of Kansas.

    Aaron has experience working with a diverse group of students who have studied a wide variety of majors. He has excelled in coaching students and alumni in their search for the right fit, whether that be part-time jobs, internships, or full-time positions. He has also succeeded in partnering with employers in all industries, assisting small to large companies find top candidates. From individual job search strategies to career development workshops to classroom instruction, Aaron brings a passion for helping individuals on their career path.

  • James Mable - Director of Career and Calling

    James Mable serves as Director of Career and Calling and is responsible for overseeing the entire Career Services operation.

    James is the Career Counselor for the following colleges/schools on campus:

    • College of Education & Behavioral Sciences
    • School of Humanities
    • HBU Alumni 

    Mable brings a diverse skillset and an array of Career Services perspectives having previously worked as a Career Advisor in the for-profit side of Higher Education at American InterContinental University (AIU) as well as a Workforce Career Advisor at Lone Star College. The Career Services Office at AIU attained a 90.7% placement rate during Mable’s tenure which was the highest among 75 other colleges and universities within Career Education Corporation. At Lone Star College, Mable was responsible for sourcing companies and co-op sites in order to place students enrolled in Workforce programs including Automotive, Machining, Welding, Architectural Engineering, Visual Communications, Information Technology, Oilfield Service, Cosmetology, Engineering Design and additional programs. Mable personally placed 100+ students into Co-ops while serving in the role.
    Career Services at HBU is centralized as the Office of Career and Calling provides services and resources for all schools and colleges on campus. Mable previously served as Assistant Director and was responsible for Employer Relations and programming.
    Mable has presided over the expansion in the number of industry-focused Career Fairs and Career Development Seminars involving student organizations. Mable is interested in building strategic partnerships with industry professionals on behalf of HBU students and alumni.
    Mable has worked in Career Services for a number of years at institutions in the Houston region including the University of Houston, Lone Star College, and American InterContinental University and also serves as a First Year Experience Instructor at HBU.
