YES Prep, Gulfton – After School Centers on Education (ACE)

At YES Prep, a grant has provided students opportunities to practice Karate, hip-hop, step, cooking, chess, slam poetry, theater, soccer, baseball, and much more. Through ACE, we’ve also offered opportunities for parents and guardians, including financial literacy sessions, Zumba, nutrition workshops, and ESL classes.  Come and serve in the ACE Afterschool Program where students are needed to provide homework support and tutoring services for middle school students. Come and serve as a mentor to a middle school student that could use your friendship. (Background checks are required)
Hours to serve:  Monday –Thursday from 3:30-5:30

The Forge

At the Forge their mission is to holistically equip families to fulfill their GOD-Given potential.  If you are interested in working one-on-one with an elementary or middle school student, we have an opportunity for you to meet an important need in our after-school program! The FORGE is looking for Christ-followers to commit to coming once or twice a week on Monday-Friday afternoons from 4-6pm and work with students on their reading and math skills. (Background checks are required)

Opportunities to serve at The Forge:

(1) Teach specialty classes – Monday-Friday, 3:30-6:30 pm

  • Teach a weekly class in your specialty (dance, karate, music, art, etc.).  Age groups range from Kindergarten to 8th grade.  (Each class must be approved by the Education Director)
  • Host a weekly math or reading workshop
  • Come read stories or plan an activity to do with students

(2)  Sports Program participation – Coaches encourage their players through scripture and introduce them to a God who cares for them deeply and wants relationship with them. We have 3 tenants we teach; love God, love your neighbor and have FUN!

  • Adult Open Gym (Monday, Wednesday,& Thursday 8:30am-11:00am)
  • Basketball Coaches (Monday-Thursday & Saturday)

(3) Assistance with Adult Programs – The need is for servant-minded, organized, multitasking volunteers to help with preparation, reminders, and recruitment for the following adult classes:

  • Celebrate Recovery – Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered program with foundations firmly established in Biblical truth. The 12 Steps with accompanying Scriptures and the 8 Principles based on the Beatitudes offer participants a place to bring their hurts, habits and hang-ups and find hope, freedom, sobriety, healing, and encouragement through Jesus Christ.
  • Revolution Parenting Class 
  • The Covenant –  Working with clients to identify and achieve career goals

 Refugee Services of Texas (RST)

Refugee Services of Texas is a social service agency dedicated to resettling and providing services to refugees and other displaced persons fleeing persecution based on race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, and/or political opinion. With the ultimate goal of helping individuals integrate and thrive in their new community, RST provides services to refugees, unaccompanied minors, survivors of human trafficking, and other displaced, vulnerable populations from over thirty different countries of origin. (Background checks are required)

Hours to serve: Based on individual schedules and student organizations are encouraged to participate.

First & Goal, Inc./Las Americas School (Must be able to speak Spanish)

One of the greatest resources that you can give to a child is your time.  First and Goal, Inc. understands and appreciates the importance of one on one time for youth.  Children look first to model themselves after positive role models before they display deviant behavior.  It is the goal of First and Goal to provide constant, consistent role models and mentors for their programs.  Volunteering just a few hours a week of your time can be the catalyst to begin a change in a young life. This opportunity is for Spanish speaking students.

Hours to serve:  Thursdays, 3:45-5:00 pm
