Admission Requirements for Prospective Nursing students

  • Step 1: Apply to HBU
    Fill out the the HBU application for admission
    By March 1st for Fall Entries and by September 1st for Spring Entries
    • All official transcripts must be received and reviewed by Admissions
      • Students whose transcripts reflect more than two grades of “D” or “F” in the required science courses, or more than one grade of “D” or “F” in a nursing course will not be eligible to enter or continue in the program. 
      • Freshman: Submit High School Transcripts and SAT/ACT scores
      • Transfers: All official transcripts received and reviewed by Admissions

    REMEMBER: You need a minimum GPA of 

    • 3.0 Cumulative for Admission  (Transfer student)
    • 3.0 Cumulative from HBU (current Pre-Nursing students)
      • minimum of 12 credits completed at HBU
    • 3.0 Cumulative for required sciences
      • Anatomy and Physiology I & II, Intro to Microbiology, and Intro to Chemistry

    Liberal Arts Core Curriculum for University Graduation Requirements:

    Must be completed before entering last semester in program
    • ART 2343 or MUSI 1331
    • ENGL 2315 (or 2325): Great Works Literature I (or II)
    • HIST 2311 (or 2312): Western Civilization I (or II)
    • HIST 2313 (or 2323): US History to 1877 (or from 1877)
    • PHIL 1310: Logic
    • PHIL 1313: Introduction to Philosophy
    • CHRI 1313: Old Testament
    • CHRI 1323: New Testament
    • CHRI 2373: Christian Theology
    • 4Hours of Electives

  • Step 2: Complete Program Course Requirements

    by September 15th for Spring and March 15th for Fall

    • ENGL 1320: Writing for Wisdom I
    • ENGL: Writing for Wisdom II
    • CHEM 1404: Introduction to Chemistry**
    • BIOL 2414: Anatomy & Physiology I (A&P I)**
    • BIOL 2414: Anatomy & Physiology (A&P II)**
    • BIOL 1414: Introduction to Microbiology**
    • MATH 1305: Math for Critical Thinking (or any higher math)
    • PSYC 1313: General Psychology
    • PSYC 3313: Human Growth & Development
    • PSYC 2301: Statistics for Behavioral Sciences
    • GOVT 2313: American and Texas Government
    **Science courses cannot be older than 7 yrs

  • Step 3: Take the HESI A2 Entrance Exam
    • A minimum score of 80% in each of the following subsections is required:
    Grammar
    > 80%
    Reading Comprehension
    > 80%
    Math
    > 80%
    Anatomy and Physiology AND Critical Thinking
    No Minimum
    • Only two attempts are allowed to achieve a minimum score of 80% in each of the required areas.
      • The 2nd attempt must be at least 30 days after the first exam
    • A student’s HESI A2 Exam scores will not be considered if:
      • retesting occurs less than 30 days
      • exam is taken more than 2 times, regardless of scores or testing location
      • scores are older than 3 years
    • To take the HESI A2 at HBU contact Testing Services

    If HESI A2 Exam is not taken at HBU, official scores must be requested from Evolve and sent directly to HBU.

  • Step 4: Complete HBU Proficiency Requirements

    **If you have not taken any of these exams, HBU offers a Reading Proficiency Exam (RPE), available through Testing Services
    • Math Proficiency:
      • Completion of MATH 1305 or higher
    • Writing Proficiency:
      • Completion of ENGL 1320 and 1330
    • Computer Proficiency:
      • Pass HBU Computer Proficiency test or
      • Complete CISM 1321 or equivalent transfer course
  • Step 5: Attend a Nursing Information Session

    Our information sessions are required for students interested in applying to the nursing program. During information sessions we discuss the application procedure, prerequisites for the nursing program, scholarships, and requirements to obtain an application.  The sessions usually last about an hour.

    Nursing Information Sessions begin promptly, so please arrive on time to avoid missing important information.

    Spring 2018 sessions will be held in the Cullen Nursing Building, Room N104 on the following dates:

    Thursday; 1/25/2018 @ 2:00 pm

    Thursday, 2/8/2018 @ 2:00 pm

    Thursday, 2/15/2018 @ 2:00 pm

    Thursday 3/1/2018 @ 2:00 pm

    Thursday 3/8/2018 @ 2:00 pm

    There is no charge for attending an Information Session and no need to pre-register. 

    Please view the HBU Campus Map to locate the appropriate locations for each session as well as Visitor Parking.

    *If you attended an information session more than one calendar year prior to the application deadline, you must attend an information session again.

  • Step 6: Meet with a nursing faculty advisor to submit a nursing application

    You will receive your application to the School of Nursing if you have completed:

    • Step #1 (with submitting all scores and transcripts),
    • Step #2 (if you know you will finish all course requirements by program entry)
    • Step #3 (after you have submitted your HESI scores and pass the HESI)
    • Step #4 (if you know you will finish proficiency requirements by program entry)
    • and Step #5 (you may attend a session after you have applied to the University)
    *An open advising schedule will be posted as the dates become available.
    • Apply to the Nursing Program by:
      • September 15, 2017 for Spring Entries (*Sept. 29th for 17/18 only)
      • March 15, 2018 for Fall Entries (*March 19th due to Spring Break for 17/18 only)
