Extremity is the Trier of Spirits:
William Shakespeare and the American Founders
A Lecture

The Founding Fathers read and admired Shakespeare–not only for his precision with the English language, but for the political questions that his plays addressed. The Bard was a cultural touchstone for literary expression, and a major influence on their conceptions of humanity and how men and women should be governed–often in defiance of the monarchy.

Dr. Doni Wilson is Professor of English in the School of Humanities at Houston Baptist University. She taught Shakespeare at Elon University and the University of Houston-Clear Lake before coming to HBU. Her scholarship has focused on American modernism, and she writes frequently for the Houston Chronicle. She is the theater critic for Houstonia Magazine’s art and culture channel.
