April 29 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
This gala concert featuring student and faculty performers will celebrate the end of the school year, and will demonstrate the HBU Department of Music’s appreciation for President and Mrs. Sloan.
The President’s Concert will feature a full professional orchestra, and the program will include the Texas premiere of “Song of the Captive,” a work based on the Psalms, and composed by Department of Music Chair and Director of Choral Activities Dr. Terre Johnson. “Song of the Captive” was first performed in Florence, Italy in 2016, and will be performed by the HBU choirs, faculty soloists and orchestra.
In addition, the winner of the Department of Music’s Concerto / Aria Competition, sophomore soprano Sydney Fabregas, will perform with the orchestra. The competition, held in March, was adjudicated by a panel of expert judges from outside the HBU faculty, and results in an advanced student being chosen to perform with the orchestra in the President’s Concert.
Faculty performers will also join the program, with repertoire from music theater, opera and great instrumental music. All performances are made possible through a generous gift from beloved HBU supporter Mildred Wilkes, who passed away recently.
The President’s Concert is free and open to the public in the Dunham Theater of HBU’s Morris Cultural Arts Center and will last an hour and a half. A reception will follow the concert in McNair Hall also in the Morris Cultural Arts Center.
