HBU Taking Steps to be Even More Military & Veteran Friendly

Houston Baptist University was named a 2018 Military Friendly® Gold School by Victory Media, a veteran-owned rating and advocacy organization. With support from the HBU Special Projects Office, the HBU Office of Veterans Affairs assists veterans with each step in the application, admissions and enrollment process. As part of serving veterans in a more efficient way, the Registrar’s Office moved them to the front of the line, working to certify their benefits well before their class start date. Perhaps most significantly, the University upped its tuition matching with the Yellow Ribbon Program to be unlimited. Service members have a chance to connect via the Husky Veterans Association, which has its own student group and office space.

The newest steps the University is taking are 1) matching the Department of Defense tuition benefit rate of $250 per online credit hour for undergraduate students, 2) launching a transfer-friendly policy as of June 1 that will allow honorably discharged service members to transfer anywhere from three to 30 credit hours into HBU from their Joint Services Transcript, and 3) implementing a Center for Veteran and International Student Services served by a new veteran services coordinator.

Dr. Robert B. Sloan, HBU president, said, “We are committed to serve those who have served all of us by their commitment to social order, national defense, and therefore, peace. The disciplines these veterans have learned from their training and work in the military will serve them well as they take on the challenges of university studies in the same conscientious way that they have served our country.”
