The SHSU Bearkats scored four touchdowns in the first half, setting their lead at 28-0 early in the second quarter. Quarterback Tony Dawson and the HBU offense moved the ball to the SHSU 10-yard line followed by a 21-yard field goal by Alec Chadwick. The Bearkats answered with a field goal.
Chadwick scored a 46-yard field goal before the quarter ended, and the Bearkats were leading 31-6 at half time.
On the opening possession of the second half, Dawson completed a 32-yard pass to wide receiver Ricardo Barnett, which set up a 24-yard field goal for Chadwick. The Huskies then forced a SHSU punt. The ensuing drive ended with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Mev Ajdin. The fast start closed the Bearkats lead to only 31-16.
The Bearkats answered with three touchdowns, finishing the game at a 52-16 win.
After the game, Head Coach Vic Shealy said, “Certainly, we took the fight further into the third quarter than we had in the past and there are positive things to build on, but you work so hard to win every ballgame and no matter who you’re playing, you work so hard to compete and coach your kids to win one-on-one situations, so collectively when every player does their job that the product looks really awesome. We’ll keep on going back and study the film tomorrow, we become a better team, sometimes you’ve got to play these teams and it’s part of the journey of getting better. If we want to be this type of team one day, then we’ll learn to play better like that kind of team.”
Sam Houston State is currently ranked number two by Fox College Sports.
