Houston Baptist University (HBU) offers an exceptional online learning experience for educators who are serious about their trade and are looking for meaningful ways to improve the lives of others.
These online programs meet the exact standards and requirements as our on campus programs, while offering the opportunities to complete course work without traveling to our HBU campus.
We currently offer three totally online degree programs in the School of Education:
- MEd – Educational Administration which provides students with previous teacher certification a route to earn an additional principal certification.
- MEd – Curriculum and Instruction which provides students with or without teacher certification an opportunity to earn a masters in education while exploring a variety of topics including English as a Second language, technology, curriculum and instruction, special education, gifted instruction, or counseling.
- MEd – Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialization in Instructional Technology which provides students with or without teacher certification an opportunity to earn this degree while updating and exploring a variety of technology applications and tools including topics like webpage creation, digital stories, Web 2.0 tools, multimedia tools, flipped instruction and online learning.
Master of Education in Educational Administration Online Program (37 hours)
The Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Administration Online Program prepares graduate students with teacher certification to enter into principalships or assistant principalships in elementary, middle or high schools as well as district-wide administrative positions such as program directorships and supervisor or coordinator positions. This program is designed specifically to enhance abilities in planning, organizing, delegating, supervising and leading through a variety of activities, procedures and experiences. Students completing this program may qualify for the Texas Standard Principal Certificate after successfully passing the TExES exam.
This program offers an exceptional learning experience for educators who are looking for meaningful ways to improve the lives of others. The MEd in Educational Administration is a valuable credential for educators seeking leadership roles within the educational system. The online aspect of this program offers students a convenient way to stay on track or get ahead in the degree program.
MEd in Curriculum and Instruction Online (36 hour program)
The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction Online Program is a thirty-six-hour program that provides expertise related to curriculum content and instructional methodology. In this program, individuals can increase their knowledge and skills without pursuing a certification or specialization. You do not need to be a certified teacher to complete this degree, and while it does not provide additional certifications, knowledge and skills in the area of teaching and learning will be gained.
This degree program offers the student 18 hours of core curriculum in the area of school reform, curriculum development, teaching methodology, research, and technology integration. Then the student is given 18 hours of electives in the area of education. These elective areas can include coursework related to educational administration, special education, instructional technology, reading or ESL. The student will be recommended for graduation when they have completed 36 semester hours and passed a comprehensive examination.
This degree offers students additional expertise in the area of education while also allowing them to take a variety of courses across many areas in education. Throughout the program, students develop knowledge and skills through working with children and teachers.
Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialization in Instructional Technology (36 hour program)
This program of study provides students with the tools and experience they need to use technology as a tool for teaching and learning. Students do not have to be technology experts to enter this program. Each course will provide the scaffolding to each student so that they are successful integrators and users of technology. Students in this program will progress through 21 hours of technology related coursework. Each of the courses requires the student to create technology rich lessons and units of instruction that can be applied directly to their classroom. They will be challenged to become school leaders in the area of technology integration and curriculum innovation. Each student will create an electronic portfolio that will follow them throughout their 36 hour program which will include artifacts and projects from their coursework such as: stop motion animation, web 2.0 tools, digital storytelling, podcasting, website building, and blogging.
Graduates from this program often move on to be instructional leaders on their campuses or in their school districts, but they are also equipped to be 21st Century Teachers. For those with 3 years of teaching as a certified teacher at an accredited school, there is the additional possibility of earning the Master Technology Teacher certification.
