M.Ed.: Master of Education with Specialization in Curriculum and Instruction with All-Level Certification in Art, Spanish, Music or Physical Education
Throughout the program, graduate students develop knowledge and skills through working with students and teachers in elementary and secondary school settings. The College of Education has close ties with area schools and school districts. This relationship with area schools means that students benefit from the practical experiences and the professional opportunities available. Most graduates are employed in Houston-area schools. Employment opportunities vary according to teaching field.
The HBU program is field based and requires that students spend time in elementary and secondary schools. Students are required to complete clinical teaching (12-15 weeks full time in the schools) or complete a year long internship as teacher of record in an accredited TEA district, charter school or private school.
In addition to this course work (with no grade lower than a C) and successful completion of the comprehensive exams, certification requires clinical (student) teaching or an approved equivalent and successful completion of state certification exams.
The graduate program in All-Level Education leads both to the MEd degree and to state certification. In order to teach a particular subject, a student must have a minimum of 12 hours depending on the teaching field. This is determined for each individual based upon an analysis of transcripts and specified as a “certification plan.”
Students may apply for certification when they have successfully completed the support courses, teaching field courses, professional education courses, and state required TExES exams (in pedagogy and professionalism and in content area). This may occur before the degree is earned. All thirty-six (36) hours & successful completion of a written comprehensive exam are required for the degree
In addition to being accepted into the University Master’s of Education Program, a student must be accepted into the Education Preparation Program which requires a 2.75 GPA Undergraduate or 3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours of university coursework.
As the student enters the program, a written certification plan is developed. This plan is created for each student individually, based on a personal conference and analysis of undergraduate transcripts. Students must have at least 12 hours in the field of choice on their undergraduate transcripts.
HBU offers certification programs in the following areas:
