Position Summary

Houston Baptist University ( invites applications and nominations for an exceptional leader to serve as the Founding Dean of the new College of Engineering. The anticipated start date for the new Dean is fall of 2017.

The Dean will be expected to work with faculty, staff and students to build a vision for the College, which is composed of several recently merged units. This is an exceptional opportunity for an innovative thinker with experience in change management and partnership building.

The Founding Dean will be integral in the development of the first degree program in the College, a BS in Cyber Engineering targeted to begin in fall of 2018.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, duties of the position will include, but are not limited to: curriculum development and implementation, facilities planning, faculty recruitment, budget management, industry outreach, strategic planning, teaching, and support of the university’s faith-based mission.  The university’s goal is to achieve ABET accreditation within 8 years. Development of a visionary, realistic, and effective strategic plan will be essential to establish a thriving cyber engineering program.  The Dean will also be the key representative of the College of Engineering to industry, the community, parents, and students.


Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. from an ABET accredited program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field. A proven research track record, outstanding teaching skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to high-quality student success are expected.

Successful candidates will be expected to:

• perform appropriate research

• procure extramural funding to support research

• advise graduate and undergraduate students

• collaborate with other faculty

• teach effectively both at undergraduate and graduate levels

Areas of interest include cyber, mobile, and cloud security; critical infrastructure and systems security; cyber-physical and trustworthy systems; digital forensics; and agile software development. Other areas will also be considered.

The successful candidate should also have demonstrated success in strategic planning and academic administration, including team-building and effective interaction with diverse stakeholders.  The successful candidate should be credentialed in an engineering discipline related to electrical, computer, or software engineering and have experience in program assessment and ABET accreditation processes.  The successful candidate should also be familiar with professional engineering registration, relevant professional societies, and have a strong interest in engineering education.
