Teaching Focus

 Dr. Fiese teaches all of the courses in music education and supervises all student teachers in the music teacher-certification program. His areas of specialization include assessment in music education, research methodology, wind band repertoire, conducting pedagogy, and philosophy relating to music education policy.


 Dr. Fiese is co-author of the Handbook for Preparing Graduate Papers in Music (first and second editions), and A Systematic Guide to Error Detection for Conductors. He also authored five music education monographs, Texas Music Education Research Priorities, Texas Association of Music Schools: Survey Summary, Connections, Contacts, and Collaborations: Arts in Education, Status of Music in the Public Schools in Florida, and A Profile of Florida All-State Instrumentalists. He was an invited contributing author to MENC’s (NAfME) Spotlight on Assessment in Music Education and MENC’s (NAfME) Spotlight on the transition to teaching. Dr. Fiese has over sixty published articles that include the Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Band Research, Music Educators Journal, Perspectives in Music Education Research, Texas Music Education Research, Southwestern Musician, Florida Music Educator, and Early Childhood Connections. He was a reviewer for the New Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, and served as editor of Texas Music Education Research and Perspectives in Music Education Research. He is also an editorial reviewer for the Scientific Journal International. His current research area relates to the influence of worldview on music education policy, music education philosophy, and music teacher education.

Additional Information

Dr. Fiese serves on the Academic Standards Committee, The School of Music Curriculum Committee (Chair), and the Teacher Education Committee.

Dr. Fiese also served the profession as National Chair of the General Research Special Interest Group (MENC, now NAfME), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Research Chair, TMEA College Division Chair, elected twice as TMEA Vice-president (one of only three persons to have been elected to two terms in the history of the Association), served on Summer Dialogues II and III (a select committee to determine the priorities and direction of music education in the state of Texas), Florida Music Educators Association Research Chair, Florida Collegiate Music Educators Association President, and Chairman of the Lee County Band Directors Association. Dr. Fiese is an active clinician and consultant with more than one-hundred presentations throughout the United States.

Prior to his appointment to Houston Baptist University, Dr. Fiese served as Associate Professor in the Department of Music Education and Music Therapy and a member of the Graduate Faculty at the University of Miami (Coral Gables), Associate Professor at the University of Houston School of Music, and Visiting Guest Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Dr. Fiese also served as Director of Bands at the West Laboratory School (Miami) and was Music Department Chairman and Director of Bands at Cypress Lake High School.
