The HBU Opera Theater is highly respected for its record of performance of fully staged operas, particularly those of the 20th Century including Albert Herring, Postcard from Morocco, Street Scene, Tartuffe, Trouble in Tahiti,
and two world premieres - Brian Boru
(1991) and Bonhoeffer
(2000). Full productions have been presented on campus in Mabee Theater and off campus locations such as the 1984 Opera House in Galveston and the Moores Opera House. Each year the HBU Opera Workshop presents at least one full production and one or more programs of staged and costumed scenes.
The opera department seeks to expose students to a wide variety of operatic and theatrical music forms from the classic favorites to the modern genre. The program seeks to shape and mold the expressive qualities and capabilities of each student through listening, character development, musical coaching and preparation, stage movement and performance, and score study. All members of the voice faculty are involved in the HBU Opera Theater. Each bring their individual professional experience and talents to work cooperatively with each other and with students.
