Position Summary:

The Director of the Academic Success Center provides leadership over all facets of academic support at Houston Baptist University.  This is a full-time, exempt status position responsible for planning, managing, delivering and evaluating outside the classroom instructional student support in collaboration with Academic Affairs and Student Life.  The Director fulfills an essential role for the University, serving as a vital resource for students, faculty and staff.  This position reports to the Dean of Academic Success.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide vision and leadership for the Academic Success Center, positively impacting academic success and student retention.
  • Collaborate with Student Life on Moving the Needle initiatives and aimed at increasing overall student retention.   
  • Partner with the Office of Institutional Research to assess the Academic Success Center’s effectiveness and impact on student retention.
  • Partner with Student Life to ensure that academic success resources and strategies are infused into the First Year Experience and First-Year Seminar.
  • Spearhead all summer bridge programs including but not limited to Summer Launch and the Gen1 Bridge, as well as provide leadership for targeted retention programs such as the Gen1 Success Program.
  • Develop and implement an institutional plan for supporting student on Academic Warning and Academic Probation.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate student tutors to meet needs for select courses.
  • Strategically arranges and hosts academic workshops covering key study skills.
  • Coordinate Supplemental Instruction for with high DFW rates.    
  • Manage Early Alert System “Starfish” to identify and intervene with at-risk students.
  • Implement and grows online tutoring resources.
  • Track efficiency and success of academic support programs.
  • Collect and analyzes data on student services and progress.
  • Develop, implement and maintain departmental budget.
  • Collaborates regularly with faculty member to develop and evaluate academic support.
  • Makes presentations on learning strategies and resource to various campus groups.
  • Serves on University committees including the Early Alert, Advising, and Academic Support Committee.
  • Supervises full-time Assistant Director and Administrative Assistant.


  • Commitment to the ministry and mission of Houston Baptist University.
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field. 
  • Proven ability to communicate and collaborate with others to achieve specific outcomes.
  • Ability to effectively utilize student management software.
  • Experience in academic support services.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Budgeting experience.
  • A terminal degree in a related field.
  • Deep understanding and experience working with a diverse student population in a dynamic learning environment.
