Position Summary:

Oversees the Office of International Student Services (OISS) and reports directly to the Director of Admissions.  Develops and implements University policy based on federal regulations and advises F-1 students on immigration, cultural, academic, social and personal concerns, and to process immigration documents, which assist the University and its students in complying with immigration regulations.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Serves as Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and monitors all Designated School Officials (DSO) for the campus and keeps the University’s I-17 up-to-date
  • Supervises one OISS staff member
  • Provides continuous training within the OISS and counsels departments on non-immigration and immigration issues and HBU policy and procedure
  • Ensure compliance with Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) reporting through auditing of records and ensuring data integrity
  • Reads, interprets, and applies government regulations
  • Prepares immigration forms and correspondence and files applications with the U.S. Immigration Service and other governmental agencies
  • Reviews and approves requests for I-20 forms; prepares the I-20 forms
  • Maintains confidential student files
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively to other departments on campus
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities in a fast paced environment
  • Assists in planning and implementing orientation programs for new international students, including the preparation of pre-arrival information, participation in Welcome Days check-in, orientation sessions and programs to assist students in their ongoing adjustment to the University and to the U.S.
  • Coordinate and develop handouts, workshops, email correspondence, web information, and other materials to effectively communicate information to students
  • Review business processes, analyze procedures and be able to develop new and efficient ways of practice
  • Evaluates academic records/files for all international undergraduate and graduate that are ready to be admitted to the University
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience with the SEVIS system
  • Knowledge of the F-1 rules and regulations as they relate to the students and the University
  • Knowledge of the NCAA rules and the appropriate conference rules and regulations as they relate to University Admissions for International Students
  • Possess strong supervisory and organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (strong Microsoft Excel and Access) ability to operate office equipment (i.e., copiers, fax machines, etc)
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively with others and independently
  • Ability to learn and use specific business software and hardware
  • Knowledge of Ellucian International Student and Scholar Management (ISSM – formerly known as FSA Atlas) - preferred.
  • Process and maintain student files admitted through the application process
  • Ability to work closely with university information technology systems department in to articulate the needs of the International Student office.
  • Meet with prospective as well as current students
  • Ability to create and maintain student service programs
  • Ability to work with different campus constituencies in order to create international student policy
