In Pergamum the church was under intense social and cultural pressure to conform. Worship the emperor or go to prison.

In Thyatira the church was under intense economic pressure to conform because Thyatira was a center of manufacturing and each guild had a patron deity that you had to worship in their debauched way in order to be part of the guild. If you're not in the guild, you can't find business. If you can't find business, you starve.

What is worse is that there were teachers in the churches of both Pergamum and Thyatira that said conformity was fine.

These churches failed to clean house, so Jesus threatened to do it for them.
