The city of Philippi was extremely proud of being part of the Roman Empire. They weren't going to let anything jeopardize that. So when the Christians started talking about another Lord besides Caesar, conflict was inevitable. Paul urges them to "stand firm in the one Spirit."

In most places sociopolitical identity is inseparable from religion. America is an island of amazing freedom in history. Religious freedom is the first freedom. But even here, we need to stand firm and be prepared for conflict.
