The Sermon on the Mount doesn’t tell us how to get to heaven. It tells us what Jesus expects of his followers.
The people listening believed they knew what was meant by “the kingdom of God.” Many schools of thought had been developed around that concept and the prediction of messiah’s coming. The Pharisees called for purity, but developed intricate systems for doing what they wanted. The Zealots advocated violent revolution and terrorism. Some religious groups withdrew from society entirely. While others cooperated with the secular and pagan rulers.
With all of that churning in the minds of his followers, Jesus began to preach the Sermon on the Mount.
