Guild Institute in Christian Family Studies

On October 14, 2015, the Guild Institute in Christian Family Studies featured Dr. Hunter Baker as speaker for the 7th annual HBU Convocation and Luncheon.  It was a great success. His speech, entitled "A Graduation Speech Before Graduation," had 19 points of advice for the students ranging from choices in life to choices for their future careers. Dr. Baker was well received by both the students and his fellow professors.
Those who attendend were also very gracious with their enthusiasm and thanked The Guild for sponsoring this event.  Several mentioned that they really looked forward to the luncheon each year.

Convocation was held in the lovely Morris Cultural Arts Center and the luncheon in the McNair Hall.  During lunch, Dr. Sloan and Dr. Baker lead a very interesting and informative discussion on the future challenges for a Christian University and the importance of family for human flourishing, the relationship of the family to politics and freedom, and raising children in the church.
Dr. Baker served as director of Strategic Planning and as a member of the faculty at HBU, where he co-founded The City, the University journal.  He is an academic dean and associate professor of political science at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.  He also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Markets and Morality and as a contributing editor for Touchstone: A Journal of Mere Christianity.  Dr. Baker is also a research fellow of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and is the author of three books:  The End of Secularism; Political Thought: A Student's Guide; and The System Has a Soul.
Thanks to The Guild Institute in Christian Family Studies that was represented by Ruth Alford, The Guild Vice President; Sharon Sunders, Executive Director; Co-Chairs Tommie Lejeune and Jane Caldwell and their committee Pat Bertotti, Jodi Eby, Anne Roper and Jan Danvers.  Special thanks to Patti Bailey who organized all the details for the event.  This is a wonderful event and we would like to encourage more of our Guild members to attend next year.
