HBU to begin offering Master of Arts in Philosophy

April 3, 2012

Houston Baptist University will begin offering a Master of Arts in Philosophy (MAPhil) in August 2012. The MAPhil degree will provide students training in critical and philosophical skills to enable them to serve their communities and the church in a variety of academic, parachurch and ecclesiastical vocations. With particular strengths in apologetics, intelligent design and philosophy of religion, the MAPhil program also will prepare interested graduates to continue their education at the doctoral level.

Students in the MAPhil program will complete 30 graduate hours in small classes with some of the leading scholars in Christian philosophy and apologetics, including Dr. Jerry Walls, co-author of Good God: The Theistic Foundations of Morality, the winner in the apologetics/evangelism category in the 2012 Christianity Today Book Awards. The faculty of the MAPhil program hold terminal degrees from many recognized institutions, including the University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, Baylor University and Saint Louis University.

An 18-hour certificate of apologetics, which overlaps with the MAPhil curriculum and offers electives for those wishing to focus on apologetics, also is available. The certificate can be obtained independently or in conjunction with completion of the MAPhil degree.

HBU will provide details on all of its graduate programs, including the new MAPhil, at the next Graduate School Information Reception on Monday, April 30, at 6 p.m. in the Hinton Center on the HBU campus. For more information on the MAPhil program, including instructions on how to apply, please contact the chair of the Department of Philosophy, Dr. Jeff Green, at 281-649-3197 or jgreen@hbu.edu.

The MAPhil program at HBU is pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
