Note: Spring 2010 waiver deadline is 1/29/10.

Students who have comparable coverage and do not want the HBU student health insurance must submit on-line waiver by 1/29/10 in order to have charges removed for spring semester student health insurance.

Undergraduate Students

F-1 International Graduate Students

All degree-seeking undergraduate students and all degree-seeking F-1 international graduate students are required to purchase the HBU Student Health Insurance Plan unless proof of comparable coverage is furnished prior to the waiver deadline. The cost of the insurance will be added to the student billing as an additional fee.

Ask yourself these questions: Do you have your own medical health insurance? Do your parents cover you on their insurance policy? Does your spouse cover you on their policy?

If the answer is NO to all of these questions, you do not need to do anything. You will be automatically enrolled in the HBU Insurance Plan and the premium cost ($333/semester) will be added to your HBU account on August 24, 2009. For details on the plan view the Academic Health Plan website.

If the answer is YES to any of the questions, compare your current policy with the HBU policy. Which coverage is better? Is there any reason you would want both? Does your policy cover you in Houston? What does Mom or Dad think?

  • If you decide you want the HBU coverage you do not need to do anything. You will be automatically enrolled in the HBU Insurance Plan and the premium cost ($333/semester) will be added to your HBU account on August 24, 2009. For details on the plan view the Academic Health Plan website.
  • If you decide you do NOT want the coverage go to the Academic Health Plan website after July 7, 2009 and complete the waiver process. Have your current insurance policy information ready as you will be asked to verify your coverage. Your waiver process must be completed by August 23, to avoid being charged the premium ($333/semester) on your HBU student account.

If you have already completed the waiver, you do not need to do anything further.

Waivers will be accepted until September 11, 2009. Students submitting waivers after August 23 and before 5 PM on September 11, 2009 will have the premium charge reversed.

No refunds will be available for waivers submitted after 5 PM on September 11, 2009.  Waiver deadline was extended until 10/2/09 per e-mail notification on 9/29/09.

Note: Please select the appropriate waiver. There is a different waiver process for domestic students and international students.  Domestic students submit the "Domestic Student Waiver" on-line only.  International students must download the "International Student Waiver" form, complete and mail or fax directly to AHP with requested documentation.

A confirmation screen follows a successful submission of the on-line waiver. We encourage you to make a copy of that screen which has your waiver confirmation number.  This copy is for your records only; HBU will have access to this information as well as AHP.

Domestic Graduate Students

Dependents of Students

All other degree-seeking graduate students taking three (3) or more credit hours as well as dependents of students enrolled in the HBU Student Health Insurance Plan are eligible to enroll in the HBU Student Health Insurance Plan. For details on the policy, rates and to enroll go to Academic Health Plans web site

For Students missing the Fall 2009 waiver deadline

If you currently have other insurance and missed the fall waiver deadline, consider these options:

  1. Utilize HBU plan. A comparison of coverage may reveal that the HBU plan is a viable (maybe even better) option than other coverage.
  2. Consider keeping two insurance providers. Having a secondary provider may offset some out-of-pocket expenses.
  3. An appeal form is available on the Academic Health Plans website  for those wishing to request a late waiver exception. Written documentation must be provided. No appeals for fall waiver will be accepted after registration for spring semester begins on 11/9/09. (NOT AVAILABLE FOR SPRING TERM)
  4. An additional opportunity will be provided to waive for the spring semester, starting 11/9/09 and ending 1/29/10. Note: The waiver is submitted on-line and a confirmation screen will follow a successful submission.
