President: 2006 - Present
Dr. Robert B. Sloan, Jr. began his tenure as Houston Baptist University's third president on September 1, 2006. President Sloan's inauguration ceremonies were held on November 28, 2006.
Sloan previously served as Chancellor of Baylor University, following his service as Baylor's president from 1995-2005. During the spring of 2006 he served as Visiting Scholar at the University of St. Andrews.
Sloan joined the Department of Religion faculty at Baylor University in 1983, where he became the first holder of the George W. Truett Chair in Evangelism. In 1995, he became the founding dean of George W. Truett Theological Seminary. He also served on the faculty of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1980-1983 and adjunctively at Hardin-Simmons University from 1979-1980.
He has served as pastor and interim pastor at more than 20 churches throughout Texas and Oklahoma during his career. Sloan has authored two books, edited several others, and published extensively during his career. He has also held membership in a number of professional societies, including the Society of Biblical Literature, the Institute for Biblical Research, the Southwest Biblical Seminar, the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, and Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas.
Sloan graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University in 1970. He earned the Master of Divinity degree magna cum laude from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1973. He conducted post-baccalaureate research at the University of Bristol, England, from 1973-74 and earned the Doktor der Theologie insignia cum laude from the University of Basel, Switzerland, in 1978.
Sloan was born in Coleman, Texas, and grew up in Abilene. He is married to the former Sue Collier of Cisco, Texas. The Sloans have seven children, two daughters-in-law and three sons-in-law: Charissa; Bryan and Amy; Eraina and Bryan; Michael and Allison; Alathea and Justin; Sophie and Mac; and Paul. They also have two grandchildren, Robert B. Sloan IV (Robby) and Lucy Larson.
