Master of Arts in Theological Studies
The vocational pastor or church staff member, the bi-vocational pastor, and the lay minister will benefit greatly from Houston Baptist's Master of Arts in Theological Studies. The program is individualized for each student and conducted as a tutor-student relationship. This allows for flexibility in scheduling. In addition, course work is individually determined. An inventory of each student's academic background and experience is made, and a program of study is designed to meet the individual student's educational needs and interests. The program is also well balanced. Courses in the Old and New Testament, theology, philosophy, and the history of Christianity give a strong theoretical basis to the program. Courses covering various tasks and duties of church ministry provide a practical balance. Program description The Master of Arts in Theological Studies is a 36-semester-hour program of study. Students study intensively in four major areas of theological studies: Biblical, historical/theological, philosophical, and practical. Six of the semester hours can be a thesis. The program is designed to enable graduates to continue in additional graduate study or to develop programs of continuing education for personal growth in ministry. Financial aid is available to students in the MATS program from several sources. Many students receive aid through their employer's tuition reimbursement program. Students may apply for aid through other sources as well. Contact the Financial Aid Office at Houston Baptist University (281-649-3469) for information about these programs.
