The Lady's Bedroom
The lady’s bedroom, offers a dramatic contrast to the atmosphere of leisure created by the dining room. At once more intimate and yet more practical—this very feminine room features a canopy tester bed, dressers, sewing table, crib, and women’s clothing. The framed sampler, completed by Jane Price in 1811, reads “The word is to my feet as lamp—the way of truth to show—a watchlight to point out the path in which I ought to go.” The fine, detailed stitches in the sampler and in the baby’s quilt, which won first prize four times in the Louisiana State Fair, attest to the patience and diligence of the women of the time. The mourning gloves and bonnet on display attest to the difficulty they faced.
