Who Are MLA Students
Students enrolled in the Master of Liberal Arts Degree Program are just like you! They come from a variety of educational backgrounds, careers, and ages. Collectively our students have attended over 130 different universities. They range in age from 23 to 80 years old. They come for a variety of professional and personal reasons.
In your classes, you'll find business owners, nurses, teachers, lawyers, homemakers, physicians, policemen, retirees, and corporate professionals. And while it's a diverse and welcoming group, you'll find that every one of your fellow MLA students loves to read books, write, and participate in great discussions. In fact, your may just find that your new MLA classmates become some of your closest and most intellectually stimulating friends!
"I'm still in touch with a few of the MLA students ...and I wish sometimes that I was still in the MLA program. It was a wonderful experience that was very stimulating. I don't know if I ever took the time to thank you for the wonderful classes you taught or the fact that you inspired me to do my best and try to think creatively. As I am a teacher now, I think I am better at it because of you." - Zarmina Raza, MLA '04, teacher "Most of us worked for an undergraduate degree in order to earn a decent living; in a sense, it was a means to an end. The MLA program represents learning as a means to a clearer understanding of human history and culture. The program is an end in itself." - Dan Grieco, MLA '06, retiree "I am part of a group of twelve or so MLA students and graduates that bonded in class and now our group gets together once a month. We have the best time, and I cannot imagine life without them! It is incredible to know such vibrant, interesting, smart people. We all entered the MLA program because it spoke to our deep sense of intellectual curiosity, and now we will be friends for life! Every one of us loves this program so much that we all plan to keep taking classes for fun whenever we have the time." - Aubrey Garcia, MLA '07, writer "At my age, I can't afford to be boring, so I enrolled in the MLA program. And contrary to popular opinion, I find it easier to learn the older I become. Augmenting the regular content of the courses, the MLA program offers relevant social and cultural contexts to enrich the learning experience. Additionally, active participation in classroom discussions is encouraged, providing the students the opportunity to express their own ideas and opinions and sharpen their communication and verbal skills. The contributions and opinions of other students offer a richness and diversity that is invaluable in the multi-cultural environment of today's society. All the instructors I have had display an enthusiasm and zeal for the course material that is infectious. I found the MLA learning experience to be invigorating and intellectually stimulating." - Roger Ratliff, MLA '08, business professional
