
Louis Markos
While at the University of Michigan, he specialized in British Romantic Poetry (his dissertation was on Wordsworth), Literary Theory, and the Classics. At Houston Baptist University (where he has taught since 1991), he offers courses in all three of these areas, as well as in:
Starting in the Fall of 2009, Dr. Markos began to teach the 2-semester Freshman Great Books sequence (from Homer to Dante) for HBU's Honors College In addition to presenting several papers at scholarly conferences, Dr. Markos speaks widely all over the United States, generally on topics related to C. S. Lewis, but embracing more widely science, the arts, education, the new age, and apologetics. He also speaks frequently on Ancient Greece and Rome and on Dante. To date, he has spoken in NY, NJ, FL, MI, MS, TN, OR, IL, CO, GA, and several other states; in Texas, he has spoken in Austin, San Antonio, Amarillo, Longview, etc. At most of these locations, he has led weekend-long conferences. In August of 2004, he led a seminar on CSL at Oxford University; in July of 2005, he headed back to Oxford to deliver a plenary address for the Oxbridge Symposium on C. S. Lewis. In the publishing arena, Dr. Markos is the author of From Achilles to Christ: Why Christians Should Read the Pagan Classics (InterVarsity Press, 2007), Pressing Forward: Alfred, Lord Tennyson and the Victorian Age (Sapientia Press, 2007), and Lewis Agonistes: How C. S. Lewis can Train us to Wrestle with the Modern and Postmodern World (Broadman & Holman, 2003). He has also signed book contracts for four books that will appear over the next two years: On the Shoulders of Hobbits: What Tolkien can Teach us Today (Moody Press, 2011), Rehabilitating Beauty: C. S. Lewis on Education and the Arts (Paternoster Press, 2010), The Eye of the Beholder: How to See the World like a Romantic Poet (Zossima Press, 2010), Apologetics for the Twenty First Century (Crossway Books, 2010). He has also produced two lecture series with the Teaching Company: From Plato to Postmodernism: Understanding the Essence of Literature and the Role of the Author; The Life and Writings of C. S. Lewis. Dr. Markos has published published over three dozen essays and reviews in Christianity Today, Touchstone, Mythlore, Theology Today, Clarion Review, Faith and Mission, Christian Scholar's Review, Christian Research Journal, St Austin Review, American Arts Quarterly, and The City. He is also a popular speaker in the Houston area and has written twelve as yet unpublished books. He is faculty sponsor for Sigma Tau Delta (the English honors society) and leads a home Bible Study for students and an ESL Bible Study for international students. He also is an active member of several committees related to student affairs, advising, and departmental honors.
