We offer these comments about the programs offered by the School of Music at Houston Baptist University in order to help you and your son or daughter enter the admissions process. Your support, sacrifices, and encouragement have brought you to this point in their lives, and we would like to facilitate their admission into a future in music as easily as is possible.
- Music majors are not “typical” undergraduates, nor are they “typical” freshmen. Musicians have been gifted with a special God-given potential, and one which must be developed and honed over a lifetime. As a result, music majors begin intense work in their area of giftedness through practice of their instrument, through the study of music theory, music history and basic keyboard skills, and through experiences in ensemble performance.
- As a result, they may take a lighter load in the liberal arts core during their first year, but they will develop lasting friendships with colleagues in their ensembles and theory classes and will begin to benefit from very strong mentoring relationships with their major professors - from their audition and their first day on campus until they graduate!
- Our programs have been crafted using the finest traditions of teaching young musicians. Your son or daughter will learn the craft of music, whether it be performance, teaching, composition, music ministry, musicology or conducting, in such a manner as to prepare for a lifetime as a musician in whatever area is chosen as a specialty.
- The first year will be an intense year, one in which they will become involved completely in their studies and practice and performance. Time management will be a crucial skill that must be developed and polished to a fine art! And through it all, we hope that you will experience and see at work the care, support, and bonding into a community which is one of the strongest and most identifiable features of the School of Music.
- And finally, we are excited to offer you the opportunity to observe and share in the growth and joy of performance and learning experienced by your son or daughter. With rare exceptions our concerts are free and open to the public so as to make them available to all.
