James 1:17 states, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights."

Christians have long affirmed that God invests language with meaning such that it always already reveals the grace of God. As a result of the Fall, Christians have also been  keenly aware that language can deceive and conceal God's grace. This conference aims to explore the implications of this tension between revealing and concealing as reflected in the literature and literary theory and of Christian and non-Christian writers.

This conference invites papers that reflect some aspect of Christianity's relationship to the written word and God's grace, which may include the following sub-topics:

  • Christianity, literature, and nature
  • The iconic or iconoclastic in literature
  • Sacramentalism and the written word
  • The relationship between Christianity and the trivium - Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric
  • Christianity and literary hermeneutics
  • Realist and representational literature
  • The plenty or poverty of language
  • Literary outworkings of cataphatic and apophatic theology
  • and other papers dealing with the conference theme
