The School of Music is committed to a program that is designed to provide broad aesthetic experience in music for both the major and the general student. In addition to the coursework that offers foundations in music theory, music literature, music history, and other specialized areas, numerous opportunities for creative work and performance are available to all students.

Faculty
Without exception, the members of the School of Music Faculty are dedicated to their art, professionally active off campus, and committed to teaching as a primary interest. The faculty are performing musicians or composers as well as teachers, bringing a wide variety of specialized experience and professionalism to their students and classes. Their interest in the quality of HBU’s programs is intense, and their genuine sense of camaraderie works well in making decisions which affect all students and curricula. All are very creative in their approaches to teaching and they initiate ideas for ways in which the School of Music can better serve its stated and understood purposes - all directed toward offering its students the very best preparation for life as a musician that is possible during their undergraduate studies.

Personal Environment
Study group
Houston Baptist University offers a personal, caring environment for students. Students have immediate and constant access to professors, and as a result the student-teacher relationship on campus is more closely related to a mentoring relationship than is possible at larger universities. The close relationship with professors also presents students with models of professional musicians who are strongly committed to teaching and serving. In addition to the personal environment of the School of Music, the University as a whole presents students with numerous opportunities for spiritual and personal growth and nurture. Students at Houston Baptist University are always treated as unique individuals.
