“One of my favorite memories is being a second alto in the 36-voice HBC College Singers with director R. Paul Green, and the group singing back-up with Pat Boone. We also went to Europe and performed the Baptist World Alliance in ’68.”

“I have so many favorite HBC memories and they include: music program participation, chorale directed by R. Paul Green, playing piano for the “barbershop quartet” of Coreons, taking voice lessons from Virginia Bobikian, and playing piano for many wonderful Baptist churches the year I was a freshman. I also pledged Tricean sorority and Marsha Mathis was my big sister. I lived in Suite “P” in the campus dorms and was known as on of the Sweat Peas. I loved all of my suite-mates in Suite P, and my fun roommate Kris Patrick. I also thoroughly enjoyed Westward Ho, the HBC bonfire, the small and personal classes, and the friendships I made while attending HBC.”

“My favorite memories include: recitals in the student center, being in practice rooms twelve to eighteen hours per week, receiving private lessons from some of the Houston Symphony players, and going backstage at Jones Hall before a concert. Another favorite was playing in some of the concerto-winners’ concerts in which A. Clyde Roller directed many of the HSO to accompany us. I pledged Tricean and we had to scrub the floors with toothbrushes for rush. I once played tennis with Dr. David Appleby and we were both terrible at it. I also really enjoyed seeing and hearing Andre Previn speak at chapel. Finally, playing in the band again when Dr. Robert Linder started teaching. I had him as a teacher in 5th grade and through junior high band in Cy-Fair.”

“My aunt was Enla Atwood, a contributor to the Atwood Theology Building. My niece (Melissa Kuhn Boone) was a graduate in pre-law in the late ‘90’s. I, along with about 150 students, made up the first freshman class in August 1967. Remembering the muddy parking lot between the men’s and women’s dorms and the short trek to the administration building and classrooms is exciting. The only other buildings that existed were the gym and the theology building as well as the President’s (Hinton) House. Fondren Road and the domed theatre and Sharpstown Mall were the only attractions available to students. Of course, Dr. Don Looser was my favorite piano, piano lit, and choral methods instructor. Graduation on June 1967 was an exciting event, especially in music. As I recall, only three to four of the original freshmen music majors walked down the aisle. Of course I think I was the only instrumental major or perhaps the first.”

“I lived in the dorms while attending HBC. There was such camaraderie among students. I was a member of the Singers and studied voice with Virginia Babikian. I was also an HBC Hostess and was Homecoming Queen my senior year. One of the major highlights of my years at HBC was meeting and marrying my husband, Michael.”

“Some of my favorite classes were Dr. Alma Goolsby’s English classes, core classes especially the arts, and Mr. Roy Turner’s Biology classes. I pledged the Triceans and was an HBC Hostesses. I utterly enjoyed plays in the quadrangle, freshman class elections, beauty contests at HBC, Chapel, choir performances and the Bluebonnet Bowl princess. I also remember having to get permission to wear blue jeans on campus after returning from biology field trips!”

“It is with some misgivings but with even more expectations that I enrolled at Houston Baptist College in the fall of 1966. My husband Nelson and I lived in the nearby suburb of Meyerland with our two children Barbara, 10 and Steve, 5. I had waited until Steve began kindergarten to resume the college career that marriage had cut short after only one year at Baylor University. My concern about the attitude of my fellow students and professors toward a thirty-something housewife/student was totally unfounded.
During my first semester Dr. Christopher Jordan fostered in me a love for Biology. The lab courses that a science major demands were easier and more enjoyable because of an array of delightful, young lab partners.
Botany professor Dr. Cynthia Rogers was my age, at most, and during the course of my semester with her, I was privileged to host a baby shower/luncheon for her at my nearby home.
Dr. Joyce Fan’s common sense approach to Chemistry helped me through a seemingly unfathomable course. She was a perennial favorite of the students and consistently helped record numbers of applicants get accepted into medical school.
Even though I felt totally relaxed in the presence of Dr. Calvin Huckaby, I nevertheless was privileged to take a John Milton senior seminar under his scholarly eye and even had the nerve to take him a plate of homemade cookies at one of our one-on-one sessions. What was I thinking?
Without the support of my husband and children I would never have been able to follow my dream. I am also very grateful to Houston Baptist University. To be able to take classes that would eventually lead to a degree, at such a convenient location, was a God-send. My degree enabled me to teach Biology, a subject that I love, to teenagers, an age group that inspires me. I am a better person for having met so many fine people on both sides of the podium in the course of my studies. I look forward to being part of the upcoming reunion of HBU’s founding classes, of which I am proud to be a member.”
