HBU’s Transitions Program exists to serve students by helping them develop their academic potential. The program is particularly successful in assisting students who possess the ability and motivation to succeed in college, yet have college entrance examination scores or grade point averages that are lower than those required for regular admission to HBU. Each component of the program is designed to help students develop the skills needed to adjust to and succeed in college.
The Conditional Admissions Program is for students who do not meet regular admission requirements and desire to enroll as students at HBU. Students admitted conditionally will be required to meet the following conditions:
- Complete an Admissions Agreement Contract
- Attend a Student Orientation, And Registration (SOAR) session
- Meet with a staff member of the Success and Advising Center (SAC) and complete a Learning Contract and complete any additional requirements established by the SAC staff.
- Meet with an SAC staff member throughout the semester
- Obtain the neccessary cumulative GPA at the end of two 15-semesters to be in good academic standing.
Students must obtain the necessary cumulative GPA by the end of two 15-week semesters meeting scholastic standing as defined in the HBU Catalog under Academic Policies and Procedures. *Students who earn a 3.0 or higher after their first semester of enrollment will be granted good academic standing.
Conditional Admissions Agreement
Upon returning the signed agreement, students understand that they do not meet regular admission requirements, however, they are still eligible to attend Houston Baptist University conditionally. The agreement describes the terms and requirements for the program and students agree to follow all conditions of the conditional status.
Learning Contract
A
Learning Contract is a set of educational planning activities which students and a staff member of the Success and Advising Center agree upon. It may include enrolling in appropriate courses for the semester, enrolling in a special FYS 1100 (Freshman Year Seminar) or attending workshops such as time management. It may also include using services and resources on campus such as tutoring, or seeking mentoring while at HBU. Students must complete a Learning Contract with an SAC staff member each semester they are a conditional student.
FYSE 1100 The Freshman Year Seminar
This course is designed to help the first-semester freshman student adjust to the academic life at HBU. It offers an interactive approach to facilitating success in areas such as personal strengths, as well as academic, spiritual, social, and emotional development. Questionnaires, inventories, discussions, presentations, and daily opportunities for student interactions are used as tools for academic growth and self discovery.
