Introduction
The purpose of this web page is to share information with academic advisors about advising issues. Use this site in conjunction with the HBU Catalog. The information presented here enhances advisors' knowledge about HBU resources and advising practices; it does not take the place of using the HBU Catalog.

The overall philosophy and practice of advising at HBU consists of advising the whole student - academic development, spiritual growth, health/wellness concerns, and community building. This site is divided into those major sections and other sections regarding professional development for advisors.

Please use the other Success and Advising Center pages on the HBU website as a resource. These pages are designed for students; however, you will find useful information there as well.

If you have further questions regarding advising issues, please see the Success and Advising Center (Hinton 101 ; Phone: (281) 649-3359 - advising@hbu.edu. If you would like to see something added to this site, please let us know.

FERPA

  • For you to discuss the academic progress (e.g., grades, status in current course) of one of your students or advisees with a non-HBU person (e.g., parent, spouse, sibling), the student needs to give you written permission. Have the student complete the FERPA form and return it to The Office of the Registrar.
  • HBU's FERPA information

GPA Calculators:

  • GPA Predictor - Use to predict what grades a student needs to make to earn a specific GPA.
  • GPA Calculator - Use to estimate GPA for the semester.

Professional Development Resources for Advisors

This essay series from The Mentor is an excellent piece on connecting advising and teaching. Here are the components of the essay series:

  • How do faculty perceive their roles as academic advisers?
  • What is the linguistic relationship between the words teaching and advising?
  • Do effective teachers and effective advisors do the same things?
  • Is there more than one type of academic advising?
  • Can developmental advising produce active learning?
  • Can academic advising increase human capital?
  • Can academic advising qualify as a scholarly activity?
