Admission to Houston Baptist University is open to all students and is based upon criteria given in the current University Bulletin of Information. Admission to the School of Music may be granted only after successful completion of an audition. To apply for admission to the School of Music, the following steps must be completed:

  • The application forms for admission to the University must be completed.
  • Financial Aid forms for the University should be completed.
  • An audition must be arranged. Contact the Music Office to schedule the audition.
  • Admission to the University must be granted before admission to the School of Music is confirmed or any recommendation for a Grant-in-Aid award is forwarded to the Financial Aid Office.

Admission to a specific degree program within the School of Music is confirmed after successful completion of the Upper Divisional Examination. (See information about the Upper Divisional Examination.)

Auditions

Auditions must be given by appointment on the University campus. Persons who audition will be considered for admittance to the School of Music as a music major and for recommendations for Music Grants and Band or Choral Grants (for students who are not music majors).

Auditions for the School of Music

All students intending or wishing to enroll as a music major at HBU must be accepted by the School of Music through an auditions process.  This audition must be scheduled through the School of Music Office.

The schedule for auditions is:

  • Meeting the Music Faculty
  • Auditions for admission and scholarships
  • Taking Diagnostic Exams in:
  • Music Theory
  • Music Literature
  • Piano
  • Dinner at the Baugh Student Center
  • Concert

Parents are welcome to attend the opening meeting, to ask questions and talk with the Director of the School of Music, and to join the students for dinner and the concert on Friday.

All auditions should present music from the classics (no contemporary or popular styles, please), and the music should be chosen to exhibit your best preparation and performance.  Have at least two pieces of contrasting styles prepared from memory. Bring the accompaniment score with you to the audition – an accompanist will be provided.

Please contact the School of Music Office for more information.
