Dr. Olano teaches a variety of courses in the Undergraduate Bilingual/ESL Education program, and the Spanish program, as well as the MEd in Bilingual/ ESL program. Her areas of interest include, methodology in the bilingual classroom, literacy development, ESL methodology, integration of the content areas during ESL instruction, Hispanic cultural perspectives, advanced Spanish, and the writing of memoirs in Spanish. Courses taught at HBU include:

  • Teaching the Content Areas in the Bilingual Classroom
  • Developing Literacy in the bilingual Classroom
  • Methods of English as a Second Language
  • Integrating ESL in the Content Areas
  • Hispanic Cultural Perspectives
  • Life-Story Writing: Spanish Writing Workshop
  • Advanced Spanish Grammar
  • Medical Spanish

While at HBU, Dr. Olano has served on the university Retention Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee for Technology, the Undergraduate Self-Study Committee, the Professional Profile Evaluation Committee, the Editorial Policy Committee, the Suggestions-Box Committee, the Critical Thinking Committee, and has chaired the Syllabus Review Committee and the Career Opportunities Committee. She sponsors the BESO Bilingual Student Organization; leads a discussion group during Welcome Days each year, and has led the Freshman Year Experience class in the fall quarter.

Dr. Olano has been nominated for the Opal Goolsey and the Outstanding Woman of the Year Awards.

She is active in the local (HAABE), state (TAABE) and national (NABE) bilingual organizations. She also serves on the Board of Casa Argentina de Houston.

She shares her passion for writing in her workshops at local, state, and national teacher conferences.
