Spanish

Program description

The Spanish major is designed to enable students to develop proficiency in understanding, speaking, and writing the language as well as develop an understanding and appreciation of the culture.

Requirements

Students majoring in Spanish, including teacher certification candidates, take 31 semester hours of course work, including the following: Beginning Spanish Proficiency, Continuing Spanish Proficiency, Advanced Spanish Proficiency, two senior seminars, and three classes from the five following offerings: Individualized Spanish Proficiency (Advanced Conversation), Advanced Composition, Masterworks of Hispanic Literature and Culture, Hispanic Cultural Perspectives, and Work Internship in Spanish.

Students planning to take the Work Internship must apply for eligibility for that course at least four weeks prior to registration for the quarter in which the internship is to be done.

Advantages and opportunities

Communication: Spanish classes are proficiency-based classes where students develop proficiency to engage in oral and written exchanges in Spanish, to demonstrate understanding of oral and written material in Spanish, and to present information orally and in writing in Spanish.

Culture: Students gain knowledge and understanding of the cultures where Spanish is spoken.

Connections: In the Spanish classes, students use Spanish to make connections with other subject areas and to acquire information about other subjects.

Community: Students participate in communities at home and around the world by using Spanish. Students use the language both within and beyond the University through activities such as participating in cultural events and using technology to communicate. They also have the opportunity of a Work Internship in Spanish. All majors are encouraged to spend time studying and traveling in a country where Spanish is spoken. Students are helped to show evidence of becoming a lifelong learner by using Spanish for personal enrichment and career development.

Spanish classes are small, and students receive personal attention from faculty. The Language Center provides a support system of activities for computer, video, and interactive video.

The Spanish Club and Alpha Mu Gamma, National Collegiate Honor Society, are active organizations for persons majoring in or interested in Spanish
.

Students at Houston Baptist have a double major. This is advantageous when they are seeking employment or continuing their education.

Credit by Examination: Students coming to the University with language proficiency may receive credit for language proficiency. [EDITOR'S NOTE: PUT IN CHART, P.44, FOR SPANISH]
