Art Education

Program description

Several degree plans are available: Elementary Art with Teacher Certification (Elementary Interdisciplinary Certificate), for the student who wishes to teach in the elementary school classroom and/or art in the elementary school; Art with Teacher Certification (Secondary Teaching Certificate), for the student who wishes to be certified to teach art and another subject area on the secondary level only; and Art with Teacher Certification (All-level Teaching Certification), for the student who plans to teach only art and who wishes to be certified at both elementary and secondary levels.

Requirements

Elementary Art with Teacher Certification (Elementary Interdisciplinary Certificate): Required course work includes Art Methods and Materials, Design (two courses), History of Art: Prehistoric through Gothic, Art Appreciation, Crafts for Pre-Adolescents, two senior seminars, and a minimum of six semester hours in studio art courses, two hours of which must be upper level. Students in this program will also complete a six-hour student teaching requirement in one quarter.

Art with Teacher Certification (Secondary Teaching Certificate): Required course work includes Art Methods and Materials, Design (two courses), History of Art: Prehistoric through Gothic, History of Art: Renaissance through Modern, Art for the Secondary School, Crafts for the Secondary School, Art Appreciation, two senior seminars, and a minimum of eight semester hours of studio art courses.

Students in this program are also required to take all courses required by the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. They will also complete a six-hour student teaching requirement in one quarter.

Art with Teacher Certification (All-level Teaching Certification): Required course work includes Art Methods and Materials, Design (two courses), History of Art: Prehistoric through Gothic, History of Art: Renaissance through Modern, Art for the Secondary School, Art for Pre-Adolescents, Crafts for the Secondary School, Crafts for Pre-Adolescents, Art Appreciation, two senior seminars, and a minimum of 20 semester hours of studio art courses, eight hours of which must be upper level.

The six-semester-hour teaching requirement will be divided between elementary and secondary level experience.

All majors: Art majors are also required to participate in annual student exhibitions and other exhibits, programs, and lectures.
