The Academy At Your School
Classes for High Schools from Houston Baptist University
Aim Higher
The Academy Difference
When designing the Academy curriculum, we developed unique, challenging classes for high-schoolers that will not only earn them transferable college credit, but will enrich their high school education and better prepare them for acceptance into, and success in, their chosen university.
Any student who graduates from The Academy will not only graduate with a college transcript, but they will have been taught to learn from the best books the world has to offer, to think for themselves, to integrate their education into their life, and to reach for a level of academic excellence they previous thought impossible.
The Academy Distinctives
-
Every class is taught by classically trained, dedicated professors, with over 300 hours of experience in classical, Great Books education.

-
Exclusive learning opportunities through Houston Baptist University, such as faculty lectures, bible studies, concerts, and plays for Academy students.
-
Transferable college credit from Houston Baptist University to wherever the student decides to go to college.
-
Automatic acceptance into the Honors College at Houston Baptist University, with Academy staff recommendation.
Offered this Fall at Local Schools
The Academy’s English and History classes are a Socratic-style study of literature and history, and intensive training in how to write at a university level. Our curriculum consists of some of the most important works of western civilization, across our now divided academic disciplines. Classes are designed to provide the student with an essential grounding in western history, literature, philosophy and culture through reading the original sources that shaped our world.
The completion of each year-long course will earn the student three units of transferable college credit from Houston Baptist University in English, History, or equivalent electives.
English 1320: Greeks, Romans, Israelites, and the Beginnings of Europe
(Recommended for Juniors)
The Academy’s English 1320 is a great books based exploration of the foundations of western thought and culture, spanning from Homeric epics to Plato to Thomas Aquinas.
English 1330: The Renaissance, Enlightenment, and the Making of the Modern Mind
(Recommended for Seniors)
English 1330 picks up with 1320 left off, continuing the student’s exploration into the minds and hearts of some of the world’s best thinkers.
Western Civilization 2320: World History
Like our literature classes, World History is taught from the great books. We teach World History through the texts, art, and cultural events that shaped the world as we know it. Classes are a hybrid of lecture and discussion, and use the best, original sources, never textbooks.
The Academy started in January of 2013, and more classes are continually being developed. If you are interested in offering a dual-credit class other than those listed, contact The Academy for more information.
