A noncompetitive comprehensive study of the harp

Classes include:

  • Harp Ensemble
  • Famous Harpists
  • Theory & Rhythm
  • “Harp Around the World”
  • Harp Maintenance
  • “Playing Out”
  • Private Lessons

Grades:
  • for Students 6th-12th (graduated)

Prerequisite:
  • comfortable reading in treble and bass clef. Minimum six months of harp instruction.
Check-in & Orientation: July 8, 3:30-4:45 p.m.

Classes:
  • July 9-13, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
  • After hours class (optional): 4:14-5:15 p.m.

Concert:
  • Saturday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m.
    Belin Chapel, Morris Cultural Arts Center
    Open to the public, free admission.
Fee: $375.00

Extras Sign-ups - not included in the Festival fee:
Private Lessons:
All students will receive one lesson as part of their tuition.
A Second Private Lesson is available for an additional $40.

In the Spotlight
4:15-5:15 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday with Mrs. DeRosa.
Student must bring a prepared solo (preferably memorized). If the piece is multi-movements, prepare 1 movement. This class focuses on preparing for auditions (such as Region), competitions (UIL) and performances. Participants will perform on a student solo recital on Tuesday during this class period. Great performance opportunity! $45 fee.

Be a Composer!
4:15-5:15 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday with Richard De Rosa. Students will be introduced to a specific technique in composition and apply this to create their own musical piece. $45 fee.

Lunches:
Campus lunch for the week is an additional $40. Otherwise bring your own sack lunch.

Students are responsible for providing and moving their own instruments. The harps may be locked up each night at HBU.




Kimberly Snaufer DeRosa

...is the Founder and Director of HBU Summer Harp Festival and "Harp Journeys" (for adults). She was previously Affiliate Artist at HBU and Sam Houston State University, and private instructor of harp, piano and theory at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Ontario. Her students have won numberous competitions and acceptance into prestigious Universities and Conservatories. She approaches each student individually to nurture his/her love for music and the harp while building confidence and polish. Her private teaching studio is located near Denton, TX.

Ms. DeRosa performs as a solist, ensemble player and orchestral performer. She has performed throughout Texas, the East Coast and Canada. She has played with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and TUTS. Celebrity concerts include The Moody Blues, Bernadette Peters and Frank Sinatra, Jr. The Snaufer-Garvin Duo (with guitarist Marc Garvin) performs Spanish, South American, classical and sacred music. She earned her B. A. in harp performance at SMU with Susan Dederich-Pejovich and completed graduate studies at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto with Judy Loman. Therese Honey

...has an active teaching studio in Houston's Rice Village area. She tours throughout the US as a performer, clinician and adjudicator. During her early classical training, she fell in love with Early music while entertaining at Renaissance festivals. This inspired her to specialize in Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Celtic music. She performs as a soloist and in ensembles - Wyndnwyre (playing the traditional music of Ireland, Scotland and Wales and 13th-century Medieval music) and Istanpitta (Medieval music). Ms. Honey has performed at teh 20th Annual Carolan Festival in Ireland and with the Chieftans. Her concerts of medieval and Renaissance music are on reproductions of historical harps. She inspires and motivates her students to learn about the harp's technique, repertoire and history.

Published arrangements: Honey's Celtic Harp Book, Vol. 1, 2, 3, The Royal Harpist, So Merry We Have Been, Scotland the Brave, and Two Sephardic Songs. Richard De Rosa

...heads Arranging and Composition in the Jazz Department at University of North Texas. He has previously taught at Juillard, Manhattan School of Music, William Paterson University and Princeton University. As a published author, he has written books on improvising and composition. As a jazz drummer, he has toured the world performing with Peter Nero and Gerry Mulligan. Commissions for his arrangements and compositions come from Wynton Marsalis/Jazz at Lincoln Center Band, Glenn Miller Big Band, theatre companies, TV, documentary and independent films.
