Did you know that school counselors and educational diagnosticians can apply for admission to the MAP-LSSP Respecialization program?

Persons seeking credentialing by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (TSBEP) to become a licensed specialist in school psychology (LSSP) must have a graduate degree with psychology in the name. HBU’s newly approved MAP-LSSP Re-specialization program can give credit for previous graduate coursework from counseling and educational diagnostician programs. The Director of Graduate Studies in Psychology will evaluate each student’s transcripts to determine the course work required for the MAP-LSSP. Programs of study will differ for each student because of differences in previous graduate course work, amount of time that has lapsed since the completion of course work, etc. At a minimum, admitted students will be required to complete 30 hours of coursework and the 1200- hour Licensed Specialist in School Psychology Internship.

Below are the requirements for program admission:

  • Submission of the on-line application
  • A conferred graduate degree from either a regionally-accredited counseling or educational diagnostician program
  • Verification that no disciplinary action has been taken against an applicant’s certificate or license
  • Two professional letters of recommendation from applicants who are three or more years removed from graduate study
  • At least one academic letter of recommendation from applicants who have earned a master’s degree within the past three years
  • Interview with the Director of Graduate Studies in Psychology

Additional information about HBU’s MAP-LSSP program can be found on the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) website: www.nasponline.org

"While working on my Master of Arts in Psychology, I learned that HBU professors embody talent and inspiration in their educational approaches. The talent of my professors was evident in their wealth of knowledge and their ability to disseminate even the most complicated psychological concepts in ways that were meaningful. The professors challenged me to learn foundational concepts within a framework of only the most ethical and respectful practices. This inspiration and knowledge helped lead me on a path to success as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology and a Licensed Professional Counselor."
