The first of our inaugural series of management education seminars for business professionals, described below, was successfully held on Nov.1-2, 2013.

The event was Friday, November 1,  6:00 pm until 9:00 pm and Saturday, November 2, from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm.



Cost and Registration:


The seminar fee was $200 per registrant before Oct. 1, 2013, or $250 afterwards. A 10% discount is applied for groups of 3 or more. The fee included all materials, 3 meals (Friday dinner, Saturday continental breakfast and lunch), and refreshment during Saturday afternoon break.

Course Outline

The world is in desperate need of a new kind of leader and leadership role model. We already know what self-serving leaders give us. It is time to truly understand how servant leaders can make a difference in our organizations, our families, our communities and beyond.

Building upon this foundation, our time together will focus on a three key points of learning.

  1. Using Ken Blanchard and ideas from Noel Tichy, we will develop our own written leadership point of view. Using their own personal experiences, participants will identify the key influences that have shaped their lives and how interact with others. We will identify our core values. We will develop explicit statements of how we will live out those core values, what we expect of others, and what others can expect of us. One direct outcome is that each participant will be able to articulate their leadership point of view and begin the process of learning how to teach it to others.
     
  2. Introduction to the holistic concepts of servant leadership. Using the three-legged stool model of Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges, participants will engage in learning about the application of service, stewardship, and shepherding in their lives.
     
  3. Participants will learn how to embrace the notion of the reluctant leader. More specifically, the idea that leadership is not necessarily to be pursued will be explored and expanded into a plan of action.
     
  4. Participants will have opportunities to listen to the presentation and interact in person with guest speakers who are leaders of Houston area businesses and whose management and leadership philosophy embraces the servant leadership model.

 

Dr. Kevin BarksdaleLead Instructor


Dr. Kevin Barksdale

Dr. Barksdale is Professor of Management and Director of the Human Resources Program at Houston Baptist University. A native of Birmingham, AL, he received his Ph.D. in business administration from Georgia State University in August of 1994 with a concentration in personnel and employment relations. Prior to joining HBU, he served as Dean of the Ken Blanchard College of Business at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. He has also held various faculty appointments at the University of Memphis, Union University, Tennessee State University, and Grand Canyon University. He has served as an executive in the automotive industry and has consulted with a wide variety of retail and wholesale organizations including American Express, AutoZone, Delta Airlines, Ciba-Vision, and Promus Hotels. Consulting topics include leadership development, EEOC investigation, and compensation programs. He resides in Houston with his wife and two daughters. He is an avid motorcyclist, participating in off-road and super sport events around the country.

Dr. Barksdale has written and published articles on various topics of business management including organizational performance, compensation, employee commitment, management education, and research methods, as well as on teaching pedagogy and the integration of faith and learning into the business curriculum. He has taught courses in research methods, computer programming, human resource management, employee relations, employment law, general management, organizational theory and learning, and leadership. He has worked with a number of professional academic associations including service as the editor-in-chief of Knowledge and Human Resource Management Journal and sitting on the editorial board for IntellectBase International Consortium journals and international meetings. Most recently, he has been writing in the area of leadership and also higher education reform.
