History

Without memory we can learn nothing, understand nothing.

Overview: Why History?

History is arguably the broadest of the liberal arts. It encompasses all of human experience.

The study of history broadens your understanding of the human experience, improves your moral judgment, informs your worldview, and prepares you for civic life. It also cultivates fair-mindedness, respect for others, and patient, thorough decision-making.

The study of American History in particular is an expression of patriotism. Can you love your country without also desiring to know its history?

Our history program emphasizes the study of history through the lens of the Christian faith, with a focus on the history of Western Civilization.

If you desire to learn and grow in a strong Christian environment that links the past to the present, then contact us or apply today.

Career

To be successful you must become the kind of person who succeeds.

History is the ideal major to accomplish this because it combines all of the skills that you need in every field of work: the ability to acquire and internalize knowledge, personal and mental discipline, critical analysis, clear communication, understanding of the human element, etc.

History prepares you especially well for a career in:

  • teaching
  • government and politics
  • law
  • business
  • the arts
  • etc....

You will also have a strong foundation for further study in graduate school. Our students have presented major research papers, earned graduate degrees from Oxford, and headed for professional training in law school.

HBU has a chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta national history honor society.

Spiritual Impact

We worship a God Who works in and through history.

He became incarnate at a particular historical moment, and since then He has worked to draw the world to Himself.

The finale of human history, then, is our arrival at the Kingdom of Heaven.

God repeatedly told the Hebrew people to remember how He ahd worked in their lives, so that they would always remember their identity in Him. History, viewed with the eyes of faith, teaches us about both the depth of the Fall and thdepth of God's mercy and anchors us in the hope of His future kingdom.

In that sense, all of history is sacred history.
