English
"...the best which has been thought or said." -Matthew Arnold
Great works of literature tell us the story of who we are.
Overview
Studying English literature is a noble endeavor.
Today's English major is taking on a task of cultural preservation, of defending beauty and literary art in an increasingly pragmatic and commercialized world. Cultivating our ability to communicate with eloquence and to reflect upon literary art is a civilizing and humanist enterprise.

Spiritual Impact
God is a God of order and beauty. He is creator and fashioner.
The word '
poetry'--which can be applied to all imaginative literature--comes from
the Greek word for 'making'.
Poets are makers or creators, and in seeking to understand, appreciate, and create beauty through literary art, students of English literature are approaching an understanding of and reverence for God's majesty, order, beauty, and purposeful artistry.
