Asian Dolls

Several unusual doll-like figures come from China. Among them are the ink doll carved from a hard cake of ink and painted with gold and bright colors, and the tilting doll, based on the tradition that Buddha cannot fall. These are made of thin cardboard or paper and are weighted at the bottom so that no matter how it is tipped or tilted, it always rights itself.

Another is the doctor doll. Chinese ladies in previous centuries, for reasons of modesty did not permit physical examinations in times of illness. Instead they indicated the site of their discomfort on a small nude ivory figurine, which was sent to their physician. He then prescribed for his unseen patient.
