When we tell the story of Zacchaeus to children we usually emphasize how short Zacchaeus was and how nice Jesus was. But in the context of the time it is a very sharp-edged story that enraged Jesus religious opponents.
Zacchaeus was a thoroughly despicable scoundrel and outcast. He was religiously unclean. But Jesus proclaims (after Zacchaeus' repentance) that "this man too is a son of Abraham."
What does that make the Pharisees?
