God is not a distant God. He is intimately involved in His creation. He listens to us. He wants us to ask him to do things. And when we do, he does indeed act. Of course he doesn’t always let us get our way because we don’t always know what’s best. But when we ask, God does act. There is absolutely no shame in asking God for the desires of our heart.

The Lord’s Prayer is a petitionary prayer. Hannah asked God for a son and Samuel was born. Zechariah asked God for a son and John the Baptist was born. The widow of Zarephath prayed for her son and he was raised from the dead. And there are so many other examples.
