HBU Announces Recipients of Annual Outstanding Faculty and Staff Awards

May 6, 2014

Houston Baptist University has announced the recipients of two of the University’s 2013-2014 annual faculty and staff awards: the Opal Goolsby Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Mayfield Outstanding Staff Award.

Dr. Jackie Peltier HornDr. Jackie Peltier Horn, professor of biology, has been awarded HBU’s Opal Goolsby Award for exemplary teaching for the second time. Horn, who joined the HBU faculty in 1987, views learning as a partnership: “I share this award with my students who have helped me become a better teacher.  Learning is a collaborative effort, and it is a joy to share my gifts and experiences with them.  My treasures abound, filled with memories of students who grow and flourish into wonderful people who make a difference in many lives,” she said. Horn received the Goolsby Award for the first time in 1999.
Candace DesrosiersCandace Desrosiers, an HBU alumna who joined the staff in 1999, said the award is a special honor to her because of the character of the man for whom it was named and the caliber of previous winners: “The Mayfield Award for me is defined by the person I knew in Dr. Ray Mayfield as a student. I love my alma mater, and I am energized by the work I get to do each day to see it moving forward and becoming a place that impacts more students each year,” she said.
Steve MoniaciSteve Moniaci, who joined the HBU staff in 2007, also finds special significance in receiving the Mayfield Award because of its namesake: “I did not know Ray Mayfield, Jr., but have heard many wonderful things about him from those who did. To have received this award named for him is truly humbling,” he said. “I am overwhelmed and blessed to have been honored in this way.” Moniaci is credited with helping HBU gain entrance into the NCAA Division I Southland Conference and for overseeing the addition of a football program to the University, all within the past two years.
